Introduction
In accordance with the Energy Policy act of 2005, the Department of Energy designated the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) as a National Scientific User Facility in April 2007 to support U.S. leadership in nuclear science and technology. By attracting new research users - universities, laboratories, and industry - the ATR will support basic and applied nuclear research and development, further President Bush's Advanced Energy Initiative, and advance the nation's energy security needs.
Second Annual ATR NSUF Workshop Scheduled
The Second Annual ATR NSUF Workshop will be held July 22 - 24, 2008 in Idaho Falls, Idaho. The workshop agenda includes DOE Program overviews, presentations on existing and planned capabilities for the Advanced Test Reactor and Hot Fuel Examination Facility, and will feature a special colloquium speaker Dr. Peter Ford. Dr. Ford has been associated with the power generation business for 35 years, initially at the Central Electricity Research Laboratories in the UK, and then as manager of the corrosion program at the General Electric Research and Development Center for 25 years. Dr. Ford has been a member of the Advisory Committee for Reactor Safeguards at the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission since retiring from GE. The workshop will also offer a tour of the Advanced Test Reactor and the Hot Fuel Examination Facility. The full Workshop agenda is under development and will be available via the website in late April or early May. For additional information on the workshop and to register, please visit the ATR NSUF Workshop 2008 Registration Page.
